Tax Manager - Manchester

Ref: 179Tuesday 6 October 2026

Tax Advisory Manager

£55,000–£70,000 DOE | Hybrid (1 day in office) | Manchester (M3) or Buckinghamshire | Full-time or part-time

An established, values-led accountancy firm is looking for an experienced Tax Advisory Manager to build and develop its tax advisory function.

This is a new role, reporting directly to the Directors. You’ll work across clients managed by the Year End and Business Services teams, acting as the firm’s technical tax specialist rather than managing your own compliance portfolio or staff.

You’ll identify advisory opportunities, lead client conversations and deliver projects from initial scoping through to completion. As the function grows, there will be an opportunity to build and ultimately lead a dedicated tax team.

Key advisory areas

  • Corporation tax planning
  • Capital gains tax and Business Asset Disposal Relief
  • Share disposals and business sales
  • Reorganisations and restructures
  • Holding companies and group structures
  • Share-for-share exchanges
  • Property taxation
  • Transaction and M&A tax
  • Succession and exit planning
  • HMRC clearance applications
  • R&D tax relief and capital allowances
  • EMI and other share schemes
  • EIS and SEIS
  • International/cross-border tax and Inheritance Tax, depending on experience

The role

You’ll work closely with Directors and accounting managers to identify where clients need specialist tax advice, scope and price the work, and deliver it directly.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Proactively identifying advisory opportunities across the existing client base
  • Leading tax advisory meetings and providing practical, commercially focused advice
  • Understanding clients’ businesses, ownership structures and future plans
  • Researching complex UK tax matters and reaching technically robust conclusions
  • Preparing clear, formal written tax advice
  • Scoping, pricing and managing advisory projects through to completion
  • Supporting Directors and managers with complex client matters
  • Providing specialist tax input to new-client meetings
  • Reviewing corporation tax returns and computations where required
  • Training accounting teams to identify tax planning opportunities
  • Keeping the firm up to date with relevant tax legislation and developments
  • Developing processes, templates and standards for the advisory function
  • Helping shape and expand the tax service as it develops

This is a technical, client-facing role with significant autonomy.

What we’re looking for

Essential:

  • ACA, ACCA and/or CTA qualified
  • 5+ years’ UK accountancy practice experience
  • Strong UK tax technical knowledge
  • Significant experience with owner-managed businesses
  • Proven experience delivering tax advisory work directly to clients
  • Experience reviewing corporation tax returns and computations
  • Confidence leading client meetings independently
  • Strong research and technical problem-solving skills
  • Ability to turn complex legislation into clear, practical advice
  • Strong written communication and formal tax advice experience
  • Commercial awareness, including scoping and pricing advisory work
  • Ability to work independently without day-to-day technical supervision

CTA is preferred but not essential for an otherwise exceptional candidate.

An experienced Assistant Tax Manager will also be considered where they can demonstrate the technical and commercial capability to step into the role.

This role is unlikely to suit you if:

  • Your background is primarily compliance with limited advisory experience
  • You lack confidence leading client meetings independently
  • You require regular technical supervision
  • You prefer receiving work rather than proactively identifying opportunities
  • You’re primarily seeking a people-management role
  • You don’t have UK accountancy practice experience

The successful candidate will become the technical point of reference for tax advisory matters within the firm.

Client base

  • Predominantly limited companies
  • Founder-led, growth-focused and owner-managed businesses
  • Increasingly larger and more complex clients
  • No audit, charity or agriculture
  • Values-aligned businesses

Working pattern & package

  • Hybrid: 1 day per week in the office
  • Manchester (M3) or Buckinghamshire
  • Full-time or part-time considered
  • Flexitime
  • Must live within a 60-minute commute
  • Valid UK driving licence and access to a car
  • £55,000–£70,000 depending on experience and technical depth

Why this role?

  • Build a new tax advisory function rather than inherit an established department
  • Direct access to the Directors
  • Significant autonomy over the development of the tax offering
  • Predominantly advisory rather than compliance-focused
  • High-quality, increasingly complex owner-managed client base
  • No recurring compliance portfolio
  • No initial staff-management responsibility
  • Opportunity to build and ultimately lead a dedicated tax team
  • High-engagement culture
  • Annual workcation
  • Ongoing personal and professional development
  • Continued growth creating further opportunities
